Bear Mattress vs Loom & Leaf Overview

If you don’t feel like reading through an entire article about mattresses, here is the quick and dirty summary of how these two beds differ.

  • Firmness Options — The Loom & Leaf mattress comes in two different firmness options, both of which land on the firmer side of the spectrum. The Bear mattress comes in one firmness option that is on the firmer end of the spectrum as well.
  • Sleeper Type — Both are fine for all sleeping styles, but keep in mind neither is a soft mattress.
  • Large Body Types — Although both mattresses are comprised entirely of foam (i.e. no coils), we give Loom & Leaf the edge for heavy people given its thickness and firmness profile.
  • Price — The Bear mattress is much more affordable than the Loom & Leaf mattress.
  • Special Cover — The Bear mattress has a special Celliant cover that is supposed to help promote blood flow and aid in recovery.

That’s just the 10,000-foot view of these beds, though. There’s a lot more detail behind each of these topics that you should consider. Keep reading to learn more about each bed.

Both Mattresses Have A Memory Foam Feel

One important characteristic that these two beds have in common is feel. To be specific, both mattresses have a memory foam feel. The Bear mattress uses a thick layer of gel memory foam for its top layer, while the Loom & Leaf mattress uses multiple layers of memory foam throughout the bed. As a result, as you lay down on these beds, you’ll notice that the top layers sort of wrap and contour to your body.

Now a lot of people out there like the conforming sensation that memory foam provides, but others aren’t that fond of it. If you fall in the latter category, you might want to check out our reviews of the Purple, Casper, or Leesa mattresses. These are popular beds that don’t have a traditional memory foam feel. If you do like memory foam, though, let’s get into some of the differences between Bear and Loom & Leaf.

Bear was founded in 2014 and has achieved tremendous success in the years since. In addition to the Original Bear mattress (the focus of today’s comparison), the company also offers the Bear Hybrid, which contains coils and has more of a pillow-top type feel. Now that you have a little background on the company, let’s discuss some of the areas in which the Original Bear mattress differs from the Loom & Leaf mattress.

Firmness Rating

Overall, the Bear mattress lands on the firmer side of the spectrum. We’d put in the medium to medium-firm range on our soft-to-firm scale. We usually say that it’s somewhere between the Lull mattress and Nectar in terms of feel and firmness.

Keep in mind firmness is relative. It largely depends on weight and body type. The above designation is based on an average sized person. Heavier folks may find the mattress to be softer, while a more petite sized person may find the mattress is closer to a true firm rating.

Bear Is More Affordable

This is the perhaps the most attractive thing about the Bear mattress. At the end of the day, it’s just much cheaper than the Loom & Leaf mattress. For example, the queen size Bear mattress has a MSRP of around $800, while the queen size L&L mattress has a MSRP of around $1,700.

Plus, Bear regularly offers coupon codes and promo codes to make their beds even more affordable. Typically, you can expect Bear to offer at least $100 off. You can check Bear’s website to see what their current promotion is.

Loom & Leaf is a little more reserved when it comes to discounts. They typically don’t offer an evergreen discount, but they will occasionally run a special sale around major holidays. You might want to check Loom & Leaf’s site to see if they’re currently running a promotion.

Special Celliant Cover

Another interesting aspect about the Bear mattress is its special Celliant cover. For those of who you have never heard of Celliant, it’s actually a FDA recognized wellness textile. We don’t have a scientist on staff here at the Slumber Yard, but according to the company’s website, Celliant is able to convert your body’s natural energy into infrared light, which in turn is supposed to help promote a more restful night of sleep and enhance recovery. Bear has plenty more info about Celliant on their website for your reference.

Again, we’re not scientists, so we can’t really comment of the accuracy of those statements, but if it’s good enough for the FDA, it’s good enough for us (especially since you aren’t paying more for it). Just make sure you like the other characteristics of the mattress too, and you aren’t purchasing Bear just because of its cover.

We see the Bear mattress as a pretty great option for athletes or anyone who lives an overly active lifestyle. In fact, we even included Bear on our list of the Best Beds For Athletes.

Loom & Leaf is a Saatva brand mattress. For those of who aren’t familiar with Saatva, they are one of the most well-respected online bedding companies. In addition to the L&L mattress, they also offer the Saatva Classic mattress, which is an innerspring bed, as well as Zenhaven, which is a 100% latex mattress.

Firmness Options

The Loom & Leaf mattress is available in two different comfort levels. You can choose between Relaxed Firm or Firm. The Relaxed Firm model is the company’s best seller. That’s the model we’ve spent the most time with. Overall, we think it lands around a medium-firm on the firmness scale.

The Firm version, as the name implies, is slightly firmer. We think this model lands closer to a straight firm on the firmness scale. Below, we discuss which model is best for which types of sleepers.

Sleeper Types

Despite the firmness profile of the Relaxed Firm model, we actually think it’s good for all types of sleepers. This model strikes a pleasing balance between pressure relief and support. The Firm version is best for primary back and stomach sleepers who want/need extra lumbar support. If you’re a combo sleeper that spends even a little bit of time on your side, though, we recommend going with the Relaxed Firm model.

Ultimately, the Loom & Leaf beds just provide a lot of support under your lower back and trunk despite being all-foam beds.

More Ideal For Large Body Types

In addition to back and stomach sleepers, we also think the Loom & Leaf mattress is more ideal for large body types (250+ lb). We say that for two primary reasons. First, it’s the thicker mattress (12″ vs. 10″ with Bear). Generally, thicker beds are preferable for heavy people since they’re more difficult to bottom out under heavy weight. More importantly, though, the Loom & Leaf beds are firmer than the Bear mattress. This means large folks won’t sink into the mattress as much and instead will sleep more on top of the surface. Sometimes when large individuals sink too far down into a bed, their spines fall out of proper alignment.

Loom & Leaf is a thick and burly foam bed

Keep in mind, the Loom & Leaf mattress is still comprised entirely of foam. Beds that contain coils or innerspring units tend to offer more support for large body types. As such, if you fall into the large weight category, you may want to check out the Saatva Classic mattress or our list of the Best Hybrid & Innerspring Beds (which Saatva made by the way). Bear also offers a coil bed called Bear Hybrid, which you might want to explore further as well.

Temperature Regulation

This is touchy subject in the mattress industry. A lot of companies like to claim their beds sleep cool, but in reality, external factors, like how much you run your air conditioner, can significantly affect your sleeping temperature. However, with that said, we do think the Loom & Leaf mattress will sleep slightly cooler than the Bear mattress, all outside factors being equal.

First, the Loom & Leaf mattress contains a special cooling gel spinal panel that is laminated onto the top memory foam layer. This type of gel is commonly found in hospitals to help treat burn victims. The next reason (and we might sound like a broken record at this point) is due to the firmness level of the L&L bed. Again, people will find they sleep more on top of the L&L mattress than the Bear mattress, which should help prevent you from warming up at night (i.e. there’s less material touching and wrapping your body).

Loom & Leaf Mattress vs Bear Review Verdict

Congratulations on making it to the end of this mattress comparison. If you’re still stuck on which mattress is right for you, consider the following factors.

Your Firmness Preferences — There’s a difference in the feel and firmness of the beds, though, both are on the firmer end. I suppose it comes down to you do you want the thicker bed with a quilted cover (L&L) or the standard all-foam bed that’s highly affordable (Bear).

Your Weight — If you weigh over 250 lb, we think Loom & Leaf will be the better option over the long haul (more support).

Your Budget — If money is tight, there’s no question Bear is the more affordable option. Plus, they’re more aggressive when it comes to discounts.

We hope this comparison was helpful. Thanks for choosing the Slumber Yard.
