About Brooklyn Bedding & The Zoned Mattress
Here’s a shorter video review that we posted about the Zoned mattress. The video has most of the details that you need to know about this mattress, but there is an entire post below, so feel free to keep reading if you need even more information.
Brooklyn Bedding, like most bed-in-a-box companies, offers very generous policies to make things easy for consumers. They realize they don’t have thousands of brick-and-mortar retail locations for people to test their beds, so instead they keep things simple and convenient for customers buying online.
First, the Zoned mattress comes with free shipping and arrives compressed and rolled up in a box. Once the box arrives, just move it to your room, remove the mattress from the box and unroll it onto your frame or foundation. It’s a very simple process. It shouldn’t take longer than 5-10 minutes. Once you unroll the mattress, it’s recommended you let the bed fully inflate for about 24 hours before sleeping on it.
Once you get the bed all set up, Brooklyn Bedding offers customers a 120-night risk-free trial period. In simple terms, the company is allowing you to test the bed in your own home for four months before deciding whether you want to keep it or not.
If, after 30 nights, you decide the Zoned mattress isn’t right for you, no problem, you can get your money back. All you have to do is contact the Brooklyn Bedding customer support team and they’ll arrange for the bed to be picked up by a third party crew and donated to a local charity. Once the mattress has been picked up, the company will issue you a full refund.
Lastly, the Zoned mattress is backed by Brooklyn Bedding’s 10-year limited warranty. You can read more about the warranty on the company’s website.
Overview Of Brooklyn’s Other Mattresses
Besides the Zoned mattress, Brooklyn Bedding offers several other models, as well. Here is a quick synopsis of their best selling beds in case you wanted to check out our full reviews.
Brooklyn Bowery — This is the company’s most affordable mattress. It’s a three-layer, all-foam bed-in-a-box that has a soft, neutral-foam feel.
Signature Mattress — This is the company’s most popular model. It’s a hybrid mattress that is available in three different firmness options.
Brooklyn Aurora Mattress — This is one of the company’s more premium models. The bed uses special cooling textiles in the cover that makes the surface cool to the touch.

It’s also worth noting that Brooklyn Bedding is one of the few bed-in-a-box brands that actually manufacture their own mattresses. The company operates out of a massive, state-of-the-art facility located in Arizona. The company is so well-respected in the industry that other brands like Nest Bedding and Allswell Home even use Brooklyn Bedding as their contract manufacturing partner.
Price Of The Brooklyn Zoned Mattress
In terms of MSRP, the Zoned mattress is priced just above the average bed-in-a-box. For example, a queen size will cost you about $200-$250 more than the likes of Leesa, Cocoon Sealy, and Purple (original). However, to be fair, the Zoned mattress is priced well-below its main competitor, the Casper Wave. Here’s how pricing breaks down by size.
Size | Price (MSRP) |
---|---|
Twin | $899 |
Twin XL | $949 |
Full | $1,099 |
Queen | $1,249 |
King / Cal King | $1,499 |
Plus, Brooklyn Bedding is quite generous when it comes to sales and discounts. The company is almost offering some sort of promo code or coupon code to make the Zoned mattress even more affordable. For example, we regularly see them offer a 20% off discount code. Check the green box on the right hand side of the screen to see what kind of savings you can score right now.
Inside Layers And Foams Of The Zoned Mattress
The Zoned Mattress has a hybrid construction that incorporates four different layers. In total, the bed comes in at 13″ thick. For the very bottom, the bed uses a 2″ layer of high-density poly foam. This foam doesn’t do much for the sleeper from a practical standpoint, it’s more so there to provide a foundation for the coils above.
Speaking of the next layer, this is partially what makes the bed so special. Sitting on top of the poly foam foundation layer are 8″ Quantum Edge pocketed coils. These coils are actually split into three different horizontal sections. The top and bottom coil sections are slightly more forgiving to provide more pressure relief under your head, shoulders and legs and the middle portion is comprised of more resilient coils designed to provide more support under your lower back and trunk.
Brooklyn Bedding actually says the middle portion is 48% firmer than the top and bottom portions. Depending on which size you select, the mattress will contain up to 1,189 individual coils.

Sitting on top of the coils is a 2″ layer of TitanFlex foam, which acts as a transition in the bed. Like the coil sections, this foam layer is purposely designed to provide targeted pressure relief and support where you need it most (i.e. the middle portion is slightly firmer). Finally, for the true comfort layer, the mattress uses 1″ quilted top that contains gel memory foam.
Caring For The Zoned Mattress Cover
As we alluded to above, wrapping the four different layers is a quilted top cover that is non-removable. Overall, it’s soft, comfortable, and gives the bed a premium look, but you obviously can’t unzip it and throw it in the wash if it gets dirty. Instead, if you have an accident or spill something on the bed, you’ll have to spot clean the dirty area with some mild detergent and warm water. That’s how you clean most bed-in-a-box covers (even the ones that are removable), so don’t worry, it’s not really a big deal that the cover is not machine washable.

If you’re a clean freak and the thought of marks on your mattress cover upsets you, it may be a good idea to check out the Brooklyn Bedding Mattress Encasement to protect against spills and stains. Alternatively, you can also check out the dozens of popular mattress protectors on Amazon.
What It’s Like To Lay On The Zoned Mattress
Despite the 1″ of gel memory foam on top, we wouldn’t categorize the bed as a “memory foam mattress.” We actually think the bed has a more of a soft, neutral-foam feel. In other words, the bed is soft and comfortable (reminiscent of memory foam), but the top layers don’t really conform or hug your body the way traditional memory foam does.

This may or may not be a good thing depending on your personal preferences. Some people love the contouring sensation that memory foam provides and other people don’t. It really just depends. For what it’s worth, we’ve found that the majority of consumers out there tend to find a soft, generic foam feel (like that of the Zoned mattress) extremely comfortable.
It just seems like it’s a little less divisive of a feel compared to memory foam. If you’re a big memory foam fan, though, be sure to check out our list of the Best Memory Foam Mattresses.
The other nice thing about neutral-foam is that it tends to be a little more responsive than memory foam and that definitely holds true for the Zoned mattress. The thin memory foam top layer is a little slow to respond, but overall the coils and secondary TitanFlex transition foam make the mattress very responsive. You never get any inkling of that stuck-in-the-mud sensation that a lot of memory foam beds have.
This is good news for active sleepers who move around a lot throughout the night. Generally speaking, it’s much easier to switch between positions on responsive mattresses.
In terms of firmness, we think the Zoned mattress lands around a medium to medium-firm on our soft-to-firm scale. Overall, the bed strikes a nice symmetry between pressure relief and support. It’s also worth noting that there actually is a distinct difference between the three sections of the mattress. It’s not just marketing rhetoric, you really can feel that the middle portion is firmer than the top and bottom portions.

It’s important to keep in mind that firmness is subjective, though. The firmness rating above is based on an average sized sleeper. A larger person will most likely think the mattress lands closer to a true medium, while a smaller, more feeble person like Slumber Yard team member Jeff Rizzo (just kidding) will probably think the Zoned mattress lands closer to a true medium-firm designation.
Sleeper Type Analysis

Body Type Analysis
More About Body Type And Weight
Let’s first quickly cover why your weight and body type are important when shopping for a new mattress. In very simple terms, the same mattress can feel quite different to various-sized sleepers.
For example, heavier folks (250+ lb) tend to think most mattresses they lay down on are quite soft. That’s because large individuals exert more force onto the surface of the bed than smaller sized individuals and as a result, sink further into the top comfort layers of the bed.
More petite sized individuals, on the other hand, place very little pressure on the surface and therefore sleep more on top of the bed. Accordingly, these types of sleepers tend to think most mattresses are quite firm.
For instance, one of our team members who weighs less than 100 lb thinks the majority of beds land on the firmer side of spectrum, while Dillon on our team who tips the scales at around 240 lb usually refutes that opinion. Lucky for you, we have a large team (pun not intended) here at The Slumber Yard made up of people of all different shapes and sizes.
We usually write through the perspective of an average sized sleeper, but our diverse testing team gives us input and data points for all body types. We’ll address petite and large sized individuals in particular later in this review.
Does The Zoned Mattress Sleep Hot, Cold, Or Neutral?
No, we do not think this mattress sleeps warm. First, not to belabor the same point, but you’ll sleep more on top of the surface of the bed. You won’t sink-in and feel like the top layers are engulfing you (the less friction with the top foam layers, the cooler you’ll sleep). Additionally, the bed’s construction helps with temperature regulation, as well. There’s a only a thin layer of memory foam (generally known for retaining heat) and the 8″ coils in the bed allow for a decent amount of airflow.
Given this, we think the bed sleeps more temperature neutral. In other words, you won’t warm up on the bed, but it won’t actively cool you down either. Instead, we think external factors will play the biggest role in terms of your sleeping temperature. For example, the temperature you set your thermostat at, the type of sheets you use, and what you wear to bed will have more of an effect on how warm or cool you sleep rather than the mattress itself.
Considerations For Picky People And Couples
The Zoned mattress is also a good option for couples who split a mattress. The bed isolates motion well and also provides solid edge support. These are two of the most important factors for couples to think about when purchasing a new bed. Let’s discuss each topic separately.
First, the bed actually limits motion transfer surprisingly well despite the bounce from the coils. The top layers on the mattress do a good job of deadening movement.
As you can see above, the water in the glass doesn’t slosh around all that much. This is a good sign for couples in which one partner tends to move around a lot. The less motion that is transferred from one partner to the other generally translates into a better night of sleep. It’s not good for your sleep cycle if you’re jostled awake every time your partner switches positions or gets up for a midnight bathroom break.
Next, the Zoned mattress provides solid edge support around the perimeter of the bed. In fact, it’s one of the better mattresses we’ve tested in this department. As you approach the side of the bed, you still feel properly supported and you don’t get any sort of “I’m about to slide right off” type of feeling.

This is particularly important for partners who share a full or queen size mattress. Good edge support means there is more useful surface area for both partners to spread out and have their own space.
Casper Wave vs Zoned Mattress
It’s no secret Brooklyn Bedding was targeting the popular Casper Wave with the Zoned mattress. They are the only two bed-in-a-box mattresses that we know of that incorporate special targeted support frameworks. As such, we thought it was fitting to cover the primary differences between these two beds so you can make a more informed decision.
- Price — This is pretty clear-cut. The Zoned mattress is much more affordable. For example, the queen size Zoned mattress is about $1,000 less than the queen size Casper Wave.
- Firmness Profile — After testing both beds, we think the Casper Wave is a hair softer than the Zoned mattress.
- Construction — The Casper Wave has an all-foam construction, while the Zoned mattress (as you learned above) has a hybrid construction.
- Heavy Sleepers — Given the Zoned mattress uses coils for its primary support structure, we think it’s the more ideal option for heavier folks.
Final Thoughts On The Brooklyn Zoned Mattress
All in all, we like this bed a lot. If you’re intrigued by the zoned support technology, we think it’s a fantastic alternative to the pricier Casper Wave mattress. If the zoned support system isn’t a big deal in your book, though, we’d recommend checking out the Brooklyn Signature mattress. This model has a similar feel and is quite a bit cheaper.
Brooklyn Bedding sent us this mattress in order to test it. However, we received no monetary compensation from the company to publish this review. We retain full editorial control over the content we produce.
The Zoned mattress will work with most bed frames, slatted frames, foundations, and box springs. It’s important your foundation (whatever it may be) has little to no flex and is able to properly support you, your partner, and your new mattress.
The Zoned mattress, like most beds on the market, take about 30-45 days to fully break in. That period includes the time it takes your body to adjust to a new sleeping surface.
Yes, but not for free. The company charges an additional fee for shipping to these areas, which is calculated upon checkout.
