Tuft and Needle is arguably one of the top five bed in a box mattress brands, and you’ve likely seen one of their commercials mentioning their high ratings for the flagship Tuft and Needle Mattress. We think it’s popular because it’s so accommodating, but there was one thing it lacked — the additional support of pocketed coils. Alas, Tuft and Needle Hybrid was born. It boasts a similar neutral feel as the original mattress, with extra durability and bounce. In this review, we’ll discuss the Tuft and Needle Hybrid and the types of sleepers we think will love it most.

Hybrid Mattress Construction
To put it simply, the Tuft and Needle Hybrid is a quality mattress. It’s composed of six different layers (including two layers of coils) that total 12″ thick. This isn’t your typical mattress in a box. You can tell Tuft & Needle thought carefully about the design.
Here’s a quick summary of each layer, starting from the bottom:
- Dense support foam: This serves as a stable foundation for the bed.
- 6″ Pocketed Coils: This is the true support structure for the mattress.
- T&N Adaptive Foam: This acts a soft transition from the supportive coils below.
- 1″ Transition coils: This layer provides even more support near the top of the bed.
- T&N Adaptive Foam: This is the company’s famous proprietary foam that serves as the proper comfort layer for the mattress.
- Quilted pillow top with open-cell foam: This gives the bed a sleek look and adds an extra element of comfort.
We should also add that the open-cell foam quilted within the cover and the top layer of Adaptive foam are infused with carbon fiber, graphite and ceramic gel beds. The carbon fiber is included for durability and the graphite and gel beads help draw heat away from your body.
Mattress Cover
Lastly, although the quilted cover is technically removable, the company recommends you do not do so. If the cover gets dirty, spot clean the dirty area with a mild detergent and water.
Tuft And Needle Hybrid Feel And Firmness
Tuft and Needle designed its Hybrid mattress to please a wide variety of sleepers. In other words, it’s not too soft (not ideal for back sleepers) or too firm (not ideal for side sleepers). We give the mattress a medium designation in terms of firmness.
Keep in mind, firmness is a highly subjective topic. The biggest determinant of firmness usually correlates with body size. For example, heavy individuals (250+ pounds) would likely rate the T&N Hybrid around a medium-soft, while a smaller person (150 pounds or less) would probably think it belongs closer to a medium-firm rating.
Overall, the mattress has what we consider to be a neutral-foam feel. After all, the company uses its special T&N Adaptive Foam for the comfort layers on all of its mattresses. However, the Tuft & Needle Hybrid does feel a little different than its sister mattresses. First, the bed incorporates two layers of coils so you will notice a little bit of bounce not found on the other T&N beds.
Second, the quilted pillow top and top comfort layer on the Hybrid model somehow combine to create a slight sense of memory foam. In fact, Jeff on our team, thought the bed contained a layer of memory foam when he laid on the mattress for the first time. Overall, we think it’s a very comfortable mattress.
Responsiveness
Plus, the bed is pretty responsive. As you can see below, between the coils and T&N Adaptive Foam, the bed pops back into shape quickly after pressure is released. This is good news for people who are considered active sleepers. It’s much easier to switch between sleeping positions on responsive beds because you don’t feel like you’re trapped in the mattress.
Temperature
Although the company likes to play up the graphite and gel-beads that are infused in the top layers of the bed, we wouldn’t consider the Tuft & Needle Hybrid to be a cooling mattress. The bed is not cool-to-the-touch and does not actively cool you down throughout the night. However, to be fair, we also don’t think you’ll warm up on the bed throughout the night either.

Two other attributes you’ll want to consider before making a final decision on a new mattress are edge support and motion isolation. These topics aren’t so important if you sleep alone, but they’re relevant if you share your bed with a partner.
Edge Support
Couples will want a bed with solid edge support that doesn’t compress all the much around the edges so that both individuals can spread out without feeling like they’re about to roll-off. Luckily, the Tuft & Needle Hybrid performs well in this category. Our testing team didn’t notice any issues whatsoever.
Motion Isolation
Motion isolation refers to how well a bed deadens movement that originates from the other person sleeping in the bed. While the Tuft and Needle Hybrid isn’t as good as its sister all-foam beds, it still gets a thumbs up. In our Tuft and Needle Hybrid review, we found the quilted pillow top and T&N Adaptive foam do a good job of muffling the bounce from the coils.

Generally speaking, Tuft & Needle is known as a budget mattress brand. That’s how the company made its name. However, that doesn’t necessarily hold true with the Tuft and Needle Hybrid. This bed is the company’s first endeavor into the more premium or luxury segment. With that in mind, here’s how pricing breaks down by size.

The prices are on par with other premium hybrid mattresses on the market. For example, the price of the Tuft & Needle Hybrid lands between its two primary competitors – the Casper Hybrid and Leesa Hybrid. Bottom line, if you’re looking for a quality coil mattress that will last for 7+ years, you’re going to have to spend a little more than you would for a standard three layer all-foam bed. Verdict: Tuft And Needle Hybrid Mattress Review
There’s not many negatives you can find with this bed, all things considered. It’s solid in almost every respect. The mattress has a durable construction, it’s supportive and we think most people will enjoy its feel. The bed also comfortably accommodates sleepers of all shapes and sizes regardless of whether they primarily sleep on their back, stomach or side.
Really, the only downside with the Tuft & Needle Hybrid is its price. At the end of the day, there are more affordable hybrid mattresses available on the market. Still, if you’re simply looking for a quality hybrid mattress from a respected, big-name brand, it’s tough to go wrong with the Tuft & Needle Hybrid.
