You aren’t going to feel stuck in this mattress at all. The memory foam in this mattress isn’t enough to create that sink-in, stuck-in-the-mud feeling.

The Aurora is a hybrid mattress that incorporates pocketed coils, proprietary foam and Energex foam. Specifically, the mattress has five layers:

- Coil layer — 8” layer of zoned support pocketed coils, which provide targeted support for all body types

Aurora Cooling Mattress Cover
The cover on the Brooklyn Aurora really plays into the bed’s notable temperature regulation. It’s a soft, smooth Euro-top cover that incorporates a phase change technology to actively cool you down. The company says the bed will cool you down to 88° F, but we can’t vouch for that exact number. We will say that this is a decidedly cool-sleeping bed, though. The cover is cool to the touch.

Brooklyn Aurora vs. Casper
Casper is a foam mattress and the Aurora is a cooling hybrid bed. With Casper, you’ll have more of a soft foam type feel, while Aurora has more of an innerspring feel. Aurora is the better mattress for heavier individuals because of its support coils, but Casper is the better mattress for college students, guest rooms, RV/Camper, budget shoppers and so on because it’s more affordable. One thing that is interesting with this comparison is that Casper sort of fills the void in terms of firmness that the Aurora doesn’t offer. The soft and medium models of the Aurora skew softer, and the firm model, firmer. Casper is right in the middle at about a true medium.

The new Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR mattresses come in both a coil and all-foam version. Either way, though, they have a dense and deep memory foam feel. They offer a good deal of pressure relief—particularly if you get the softer models—but they feel nothing like the Aurora. This decision comes down to whether you want a memory foam bed (Tempur-Pedic) or a coil, cooling bed (Aurora). Despite the fact that the Tempur-Pedic beds have a cooling cover, we would give the edge for hot sleepers to the Aurora.

If you press on that layer, you can feel that it’s responsive and not quite as pressure-relieving as other foams. No, you don’t need to flip this bed. In fact, you shouldn’t. The layers of the mattress are constructed in a specific order, from base to top. You can, however, rotate the bed every six to eight months.
Generally, it takes 30-45 days to break in a bed. In that time, the mattress will have softened up some. 30-45 days is also about the time it takes for your body to fully adjust to a new sleeping surface.
Like almost any new mattress, there’s a new-mattress smell. Even the natural and organic beds have a fresh-out-of-the-box smell, though it’s admittedly less pungent than the usual chemical off-gassing. The Aurora does have an off-gassing period.
