What Makes These The Best Toppers?
The folks at The Slumber Yard have a team with a wide range of sleeper types, body types, and opinions that we consult before making any type of Best list. Our reviews, on the other hand, are 100% authentic because we aren’t paid by or partnered with any bedding mattress brands. So you can always trust our content is reliable, sincere, and reflects the opinions of our diverse team. For this list, our criteria was the quality of the materials used, their value and their comfortability compared to the other toppers that we’ve tested.
ViscoSoft Serene Hybrid — Editor’s Choice Mattress Topper
The Serene Hybrid Mattress Topper from ViscoSoft is 4″ thick and has a two-part construction. The base layer which provides support and pressure relief is a thick slab of gel-infused memory foam, while the top layer is a 1.5″ quilted pillow top cover stuffed with down-alternative material for an extra-plush feel. We think it really neutralizes that memory foam feel, so it isn’t viscous or slow responding like the Allswell or Layla toppers on our list.
The soft and smooth cover is made with satin and has a 300-thread count, making it a premium option for those who are willing to spend a little extra money on a new topper. With that being said, this isn’t as expensive as you might think it is.
Prices for this topper start around $130 for a twin and go up to $202 for a CA king size.
Why we picked this topper – While it doesn’t sleep cool to the touch, it will help regulate temperature better than your average memory foam. We think it has a great design, as the pillow top just fits over the memory foam layer and your mattress like a fitted sheet. This is something that differentiates itself from the other premium toppers on our list.
Tuft And Needle — Best Mattress Topper For College
This one just feels comfortable, responsive, soft, but you don’t get that viscous feel as you do on memory foam toppers. The Tuft & Needle mattress topper is 2” thick and doesn’t come with any straps or buttons to keep it attached to your mattress. Instead, the bottom is textured with silicone beading, and we think it does a pretty good job at keeping the mattress in place. It also comes with a soft grey cover that’ll help with upkeep and durability.
It’s not the most inexpensive mattress topper on the market, but it’s certainly not too pricey either. It’s a good option for people looking to purchase a quality mattress topper, while also saving a little money. You can buy a twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, or CA king, so they have a full range of sizes to choose from. A queen size goes for about $150, and they’re also known to run a few promotions here and there.
Why we chose this topper – We’re big fans of Tuft & Needle’s mattress here at The Slumber Yard, so we weren’t too surprised when we ended up crowning the Tuft & Needle topper as “editor’s choice.” One major reason is that it’s one of the only soft foam mattress toppers we’ve seen out there. In our experience, they’re usually manufactured with memory foam or plush foam that feels like a pillow-top. Another reason why the Tuft & Needle topper is our editor’s pick? Its attractive price tag.
Layla — Best Mattress Topper For Side Sleepers
The Layla topper is 2” thick and is constructed with copper-infused memory foam, which is beneficial for a number of reasons including temperature regulation and its antimicrobial properties. The copper attracts heat away from you and your mattress to prevent you from overheating, plus it blocks and kills bacteria. It also comes with straps at all four corners of the topper so you can easily secure it to your mattress.
This topper’s cover is designed with Layla’s signature honeycomb pattern, so it’ll match perfectly with your Layla mattress if you happen to have one. Also, did we mention it was manufactured in the USA? So we think it’s also a great option for particularly patriotic folks who prefer to purchase American made products.
Price-wise, the Layla topper is one of the more expensive products in this lineup, but many people are willing to invest more if it means better sleep. The queen size topper goes for about $300, and it’s available in twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and CA king. With that being said, it’s a high-quality topper and we think you’ll get your money’s worth if you’re a side sleeper who enjoys memory foam.
Why we picked this topper – We put the Layla mattress at the top of our list for the best mattresses for side sleepers, so it’s only fitting we make Layla the best mattress topper for side sleepers as well. It definitely earned its spot though, with a soft memory foam feel similar to the popular mattress that gently contours to the curves of a side sleeper’s body. We would also likely pick it as the best memory foam topper as well!
Allswell — Best Mattress Topper For Hip & Back Pain
Allswell has three different mattress toppers to choose from, but we think their middle tier and premium topper are the best for folks who have lower back and hip pain because they’re extra thick and supportive. The middle tier model is Allswell’s 4” memory foam topper infused with copper-gel. Then, their top-tier model is a 4” “CoolTouch” memory foam mattress topper infused with graphite and copper-gel. Each one starts with a 2” slab of dense poly foam, and are topped with a 2″ memory foam layer.
We rated both of these toppers at a medium-firm because they’re supportive, but you can still feel the pressure relief from the memory foam. Folks with hip and back pain will appreciate that extra layer of padding and support, which is one major reason why Allswell earned this spot on our best mattress padding list.
You can find copper-gel inside the middle tier topper, which again, helps draw heat away from you so you sleep more comfortably throughout the night. The premium model kicks it up a notch and is constructed with a cooling strip in the middle of the topper (where most of your body heat is retained). It’s also infused with both graphite and copper-gel, so we suggest particularly hot sleepers consider this topper.
We think the price of these Allswell toppers is actually really fair, considering the thickness and extra features they’re constructed with. The second tier model goes for around $135, and it goes up to about $160 for the premium one. So in general, we think you’ll be getting a really good value if you end up purchasing one of Allwell’s toppers.
Why we chose this topper – We think Allswell gives customers multiple options at very affordable prices. Not to mention, we love the thick, two-layer design of the brand’s two top-tier options. If you want a quality topper that’s also budget-friendly, we think these are great picks.
Casper Mattress Topper — Most Comfortable
We were really impressed by Casper Topper’s three-layer design because we’ve never seen another topper like it, yet. The bottom is constructed with viscoelastic foam — which to you just basically means memory foam.
The second layer is graphite latex, super comfortable material with temperature regulation properties due to the incorporation of graphite. It essentially wicks away moisture and your body heat, allowing you to sleep more comfortably at night. The final layer at the top is made out of polyurethane foam, a fancy way we mattress folk describe neutral-foam.
Instead of straps or textured beading on the underside of the topper to keep it in place on your mattress, the bottom of the cover is constructed with a completely different textured fabric meant to grip your mattress.
Price-wise, this topper is definitely more on the expensive side, but it’s not the most costly topper on our list. A mattress topper queen retails for about $295 — again not low but not outrageous. Especially considering how premium it feels when you lay down on it. So if you’re on a tight budget you may want to consider other toppers on this list. If you’re willing to turn a blind eye to the price, we think it’s really enjoyable.
Why we added this topper – The combination of all three foams gives the Casper Mattress Topper a really soft, and comfortable feel. It’s much lighter and airier than a topper made with dense memory foam, like the Allswell topper. It’ll soften up the feel of almost any mattress unless your bed is already rated soft on the firmness scale. Casper is also a well-reputable, popular online brand that most people seem to really love.
Linenspa Topper — Best Mattress Topper For College
We think the Linenspa 2” mattress topper has a soft memory foam feel that’s not as prominent as the 3” Lucid topper, but it’s close.
This memory foam topper is also gel-infused to aid in keeping the mattress from heating up (as memory foam has a reputation of doing). It’s filled with thousands of tiny polyurethane gel beads (exactly like the Lucid topper), and it helps prevent your body from overheating in the middle of the night.
The Linenspa mattress topper is also available on Amazon, and if you’re a college student who needs their topper ASAP (because you procrastinated from buying it all summer in a typical, college student fashion), it’s eligible for Amazon Prime. It’s the same price on Amazon as it is on the Linenspa website, which is about $57 for a mattress topper queen.
Similar to Lucid, this topper didn’t come with any straps or fastenings to keep the mattress from moving around on your bed, but we don’t think it needs it because it’s pretty darn heavy.
Why we added this topper – The Linenspa topper is definitely one of the most, if not the most affordable mattress topper we’ve ever tested. And for somebody who has to spend money on classes, books, and materials, we know that’s music to your ears. It’s the ultimate option for college students because it’ll transform a dinky dorm room mattress or cheap apartment bed, for a price that’ll fit in with a top ramen budget. It
Birch — Best Latex Bed Topper
The Birch mattress is known for its all-natural materials, and they decided to utilize those same materials for their Plush Pillow Topper. First, is organic Talalay latex responsibly sourced from tropical rubber trees found in Southeast Asia, Brazil, and Africa. This is where the bulk of this topper’s support will come from.
Next, is wool from select farms in New Zealand where sheep are pasture-fed and free to roam as they please. The wool is meant to add an extra comfort component to the topper. Last, is 100% organic cotton for its moisture-wicking properties, and to allow for better breathability.
The Birch Plush Pillow Topper is about 3″ thick, and it comes in a range of sizes: twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and CA king. Price starts at $250 for a twin size topper and goes all the way up to $500 for a mattress topper king. That means it has earned its spot as the most expensive topper on this list. With that said, we think environmentally conscious folks will really see the value in it.
If you were to let yourself fall back on this topper, you don’t plop and sink like you would on an Allswell memory foam topper. Instead, you’ll feel your body slightly bounce before settling on top of it. That’s likely due to the responsive, yet supportive Talalay latex foam constructed inside. The wool and organic cotton, on the other hand, makes the topper feel plush, soft, and comfortable to sleep on.
We picked this topper – This pick is for the eco-conscious shoppers who want a natural and organic topper that’ll add a bouncy, supportive feel to the top of your mattress. It’s basically the opposite of memory foam, which could be a huge plus to a lot of sleepers who dislike a slow responding, viscous feel.
